I might hate SUVs but I don’t claim to be a saint. I don’t live in a cardboard hut. I don’t have a diet consisting of nothing but sawdust. And I do have a car. But we can still have a Western lifestyle and be good to the environment and the people who live in this world.

It’s a matter of trying our best to be as good as we can and make sacrifices when possible. Today I went to the grocery store on foot and carried my food in a rucksack. I looked out for foods that weren’t grown in the other side of the planet. I eat a vegetarian diet.

When I drive I try my best to stick to the rules of hypermiling. When I see that I’m approaching a red light I let the car gradually slow down so that I’m not slamming my foot on the break. When the light turns to green, I allow the car to gradually increase in speed rather than racing off like a mad an.

My car is pretty old as it was made in 1994. I plan on keeping it for as long as possible and keep paying for repairs as this is ultimately better than buying a whole new car.

If you are reading this thinking that I’m jealous in some way that my answer is an emphatic NO. I’m very happy and actually I could afford to buy a few SUVs if I so wished. With the car market the way it’s been lately, it doesn’t take much money to buy one.

I simply cannot understand why people would be so selfish as to own one of these horrid vehicles. They are just so unnecessary and they cause so many problems. You are being ripped off as SUVs aren’t anywhere near as good as the marketing would suggest and you are paying through the nose for the privilege.
